I Get Letters

8 February 2004

It's long past time I caught up on email people have sent. My comments are in italics.

From SV: I think I may have told you last e-mail; your site is fabulous! I believe you may have given me the courage to stop being so damn self conscious and to start dating again. I've been asked out, but I've been making up excuses b/c I am afraid they won't accept me in my sweatiness. I haven't had the nerve to brave a real date with the opposite sex - but I think I can, I think I can. :-))) Thanks again for your amusing stories and perspective on our condition.

Bravo on your progress! Don't let HH stop you from getting Out There and living life to the fullest.

From TS: I am so glad I found your site. Finally a site I can relate too. I used to think this problem was linked to obesity, but I am a 37-year old mother of two who is in excellent physical condition. Just within the last year or so I started sweating excessively under my arms. Like you, by the time I get to work in the morning my underarms are usually soaked. Sometimes I've tried putting napkins under my arms for the 20 minute ride to work, but it doesn't matter. When I take them out I can already feel the tingling under my arms start. I'm constantly going in the ladies room to try to sop up the excess moisture with paper towels. At first I thought it was due to excessive shaving or a symptom of early menopause. My husband thought it was because I was nervous or tense. I do notice that it seems to be worse at work or in public vs. at home, so I suppose that could have something to do with it. And I am not a "hot" person. I can be cold in 85 degree weather if there is a breeze! I've tried several "name-brand" anti-perspirants that claim to be the strongest and nothing seems to work. My question isdo you have any idea why this would have started all of a sudden at this stage of my life? Thanks for being out there. T.S.

Onset of HH after your twenties can be a sign of a disease. Next time you have a physical be sure to ask to have your thyroid tested. Also see below for information about birth control pills.

From AW: Janet -- I wanted to write and tell you how much your site has helped me. I'm 17 and my armpit sweating began when I was 14. When I'm nervous like for exams or dates I can drench my shirt down to my bra band just like you describe. In school I became afraid to raise my hand and then started avoiding my friends too. Antiperspirants didn't help much and it became a vicious cycle where simply worrying about my friends noticing would make me sweat more. Finding your site was so great. Seeing those pictures I learned I was not the only one with HH and not a freak of nature and that helped me cope and relax. Last week I met a guy at a dance and he told me my top was all sweaty under my arms and I had the courage to reply, "Yes, you're right, it is. It's called hyperhidrosis and simply means I sweat more than other people." I was so proud of myself that I was able to handle his comment in a matter-of-fact way rather than get rattled by it. He must have seen I was totally calm about it because he didn't mention it again and this week he called me for a date! Thanks so much for your site!

You go, girl! When I was around your age I remember making out with my date at a movie. He reached, found my armpit sopping wet, and made some comment about it. I just told him it happened all the time, and pulled him back for more smooching!

From J: Just thought id email u and say u have put together a cool website. I couldnt belive me eyes to see the likes of beautiful women such as Martina Hingis, Cameron Diaz, and Christina having sweat rings, And good for them 2 that it dont bother them. I'm getting my sweat glands removed, as the sweating has really bothered my life in general, but i respect the fact that you have come to terms with it and dont let it bother u, that's cool.

Surgery would not be my choice, but whatever course you take to deal with your HH I wish you the best.

From Ri.57: I want to thank you for the tip about the anti-bacterial soap, this just works great. Also for feet, I wanted to post that, but it's too late. Maybe in the future we will get a chance to let all these feet-people know?

Ri.57's referring to my recommendation to use an anti-bacterial soap only on your problem areas. Since I don't like using antiperspirants or deodorants, instead I wash my armpits with Safeguard and for me that really keeps odor at bay.

From AG: Hey Janet~I just wanted to update you. I stopped taking the BC and am using just the progesterone cream. It's amazing!! My sweating has decreased significantly, so much that I've stopped taking the Robinul. I still sweat a little, but nothing like before. I don't start dripping when I get anxious or nervous. And my worst time of the day was in the mornings...not any more. This is amazing. Thanks for sending me that article.

Excellent news, AG! She and I were talking about the involvement of hormones in sweating, and then I stumbled upon a medical article that said certain types of birth control pills could cause your body temp to rise and promote sweating. Here's the article. http://www.nature.com/nsu/000615/000615-4.html

From P: I'm P. from Italy. I just had a look at your website and I have to say I really like what you say and your position with regard to the sweaty problem. You have all my estimation! I use to post on this forum: http://www.iperidrosi.org I will redirect to your website any person I see posting on axillary HH. But are you the blonde girl in the picture? I think you are one of the prettiest girls I have ever seen in my life.

_blush_ I wish I could say that photo at the top is me, but no, it's Elle MacPherson.

From D: Janet, I just wanted to let you know that I like your web site. I am 40 years old and have had palmar, plantar and axillary hyperhidrosis. I have had it ever since I can remember. I remember having it as a teenager but I also remember being hot all the time. I have tried just about everything except the drionic. I haven't had ETS and don't want to try it because of the CS. Right now the plantar HH is making me more miserable than anything else! I had a music workshop today where I had a part in presenting. I wasn't nervous but my feet apparently were nervous or something! My feet were so sweaty that I soaked my shoes and I had "Coolmax" socks and tennis shoes on!!! I usually am a little better if I have cotton socks and tennis shoes. If I wear trouser socks or hose I'm sunk!

Palmar and plantar are some of the toughest to deal with, IMO. I mentioned thyroid above, but want to again because in my experience dropping thyroid levels can make my feet sweaty. Still my underarms remain the sweatiest area, but I get some on my feet too. Get your thyroid levels checked out.

From CT: Hi Janet, I visited your site after seeing your post on the BFS forum a while ago. I returned recently and became completely caught up in your Kevin stories. I have HH of the hands, feet and underarms. I refuse to use drugs or get surgery and antiperspirants usually just make me sweat more from the hands and feet. The only thing I've noticed that helps (a little) is cutting out coffee and switching to green tea. And I love Comfywear! I've been thinking about making a site about women's clothing (including shoes) and HH when I have the time. Your site has been an inspiration to me!

People do report caffiene can make them sweat. It's a stimulant so that makes sense. I've tried cutting out the coffee, but it didn't make any difference for me. And yes the Comfywear stuff works great.

From JY: hi janet! i love your site. i come by once and awhile just to read your entries. i've had hh for about 3 years now and it's still bugging me. but i really do get encouraged when i read your entries. so i want to thank you for that. yea, i totally agree with you that american society makes such a big deal about sweating. and it doesn't make us any less human than others who don't sweat.

Remember you are not alone in this. Everyone sweats some, and we just do it better than most!

From T99: At your site someone had asked about 100% polyester dress shirts for men. I found that Van Heusen has started making some and calls them Super Silk Ultimate. I tried them and you're right, they do work very well because the fabric lets the sweat dry faster than cotton. I don't know what the manufacturer has done but the fabric does not feel like those old polyester disco shirts from the 70s, it feels and looks like cotton, but dries faster and any stains launder out easily. Great stuff, just like your site!

Thanks for letting me know of your finding. The oft-maligned polyester is my fabric of choice for the reasons you mention. I have more poly blouses in my wardrobe than anything else, and the newest weaves are breathable and comfortable.
