HOTEL MIRAMAR HISTORY

1936 - 1967
THE GRAND CENTRAL STAIRCASE
The hotel was built in 1816 at a cost of over 1,000,000
pesetas (€6000) at the time it was one of the finest hotels in Europe.
Highly decorated, it was visited by Noblemen and Royalty, i.e. Queen
Victoria of England visited sometime during the 18th Century and of course
the Spanish royals.
Nearby the Hotel Miramar is a large pine
forest with numerous paths with old stone made benches and viewing area
where walkers can sit and rest.
From the early 20s until 1936 the hotel stood empty then
the Spanish Government took over the Hotel and made it into a
hospital for children with tuberculosis.
It stayed open until the disease in Spain was almost
eradicated.
The Grand central staircase was originally tiled with
marble. Since the hotel closure all the marble has gone!
Aigues means water in the local
Valenciano language
The origin of the name comes from its
underground thermal waters found in the Cabeco d’or mountain also named
the Sierra del Hombre.
Take a stroll in the pine forest.
The first document dated 1596 states the
ownership to the Alicante Town hall. In 1816 there was a dispute between
the Marquis of Bosch and Alicante. The dispute ended in 1865 when the
judge of Jijona ruled the Marquis as the legal owner.
The large dining room. note the lamps hanging from the
ceiling possibly gas powered at the time this picture was taken.
Aigües was famous for its health and tourism, at the time,
most of the village economy came from the well known Hotel Spa. These days the people of the
village work away in nearby towns or in the city of Alicante.
